Dad's Day is the second part of The Unforetold, the three part intro to Stop/Time, to be released in 2009. It contains elements of Bad Day, which precedes it, and elements of Dad's Day carry through to the next portion, Hard Candy.
The song was written in December 2007, just a few days before the anniversary of my father's death. December has been a difficult month for me since then; he died three days before his birthday, one day before mine. They day he died, I found out that my girlfriend and I were going to have a baby, but I never got the chance to tell him he was going to be a grandfather.
My father, for the longest time, was kind of the glue that held my family together, and when he and my mother split up 10 years before, things gradually fell apart for all of us. When I wrote the lyrics for this, I was thinking that I was relieved that he hadn't had to witness the worst of the family problems that occurred in the five years since he passed.
